A carbon steel pan is valued for its excellent heat retention, durability, and the natural non-stick surface it develops over time. Proper preparation before first use is essential to ensure the best cooking performance and long lifespan.

Step-by-step guide

1. Heat the pan with oil and salt
Place the pan on the stove over medium heat. Add a small amount of oil and spread it evenly. Sprinkle a little salt into the pan and heat the mixture for a few minutes to remove manufacturing residues.

2. Wipe the surface
Remove the pan from heat and wipe the surface thoroughly with a paper towel, including the sides.

3. Wash the pan
Rinse the pan with warm water to remove salt, oil, and any dark residues. Clean until the surface is completely clear.

4. Repeat the process
For best results, repeat the oil-and-salt heating process once more. Dry the pan thoroughly after washing—do not air dry.

5. Apply a final oil layer
Rub a thin layer of oil over the dry surface. This creates a protective layer and starts the natural seasoning process. The pan is now ready for use and storage.

Why this matters

Proper preparation helps prevent rust, improves non-stick performance, and significantly extends the life of your carbon steel pan.
